If you’re new to the business side of design, How to Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul by Adrian Shaughnessy is a solid resource. Adrian shares advice on winning projects, interpreting briefs, working with difficult clients, and more. While it’s not as philosophical as the title implies, it does encourage newer designers to think about the projects they take on.

Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People

Fancy learning about creativity from Ed Catmull, president of Pixar Animation? If you want to discover the secrets to Pixar’s runaway successes, pick up this book. Summarizing a career spanning over forty years, the book shines a light on Hochuli's design process. Beyond defining the final visual outcome, it’s the part we enjoy most as designers. The book showcases projects throughout the years, so it’s particularly interesting to observe how design processes have evolved over time. These design books prepare you for a successful career as a designer by teaching you a wide array of topics with a reliable center around being more strategic as a designer. These books are actively researched or referenced often by members of our design community. If you're looking for a list of the best design books to read, this is it.

There are sections on education, portfolios, jobs, working processes and personal development. This book demonstrates theory in action through branding campaigns by major design studios, accompanied by illuminating interviews with many of the creatives involved. With an emphasis on collaboration and working across multiple touchpoints, this is an inspiring and informative guide to modern design. The reviewers at Creative Bloq found Work Hard & Be Nice to People to be sharp and concise, and full of inspiring and useful tips. The bite-size book is fun and easy to read, and offers sound advice from a design great.

Its beautiful photography and tips on arranging a global-inspired room makes it perfect for any design obsessive. Sometimes all it takes is browsing through a book of picture-perfect rooms to land on a brilliant design idea for your own space. Amber Lewis' Made for Living has more than 250 photographs that offer pointers on paint colors, throw pillows, lighting, and just about any other design element you've always been curious about. Leave it to interior designer Max Humphrey to reveal what it takes to pull off a modern Americana aesthetic. Think pointers on decorating with gingham, old maps, flea market treasures, and custom furnishings—all with a focus on crafting an interior that feels layered and lived-in.

The fourth and most recent book by architect Bobby McAlpine is all about romanticism in design. All of his projects featured in his latest tome offer a glimpse of the various styles out there, but the one element that ties them all together, he says, is poetry. No, there aren't rhyming schemes or lyrical stanzas, but a fluidity that comes with his work. The homes featured in this book range from Elizabethan and Dutch to colonial Caribbean and agrarian American, so no matter what style speaks to you most, you'll find a version of it here.

Of course, we had to include our very own coffee table book, which was written and curated by the editors of House Beautiful. Each section features a specific color point of view, if you will, that demonstrates the beauty of the way colors can interact. The main takeaway is that no color, shade, or tone is off limits in the home. We couldn't round up the best interior decorating books and not include one of our favorites, Joanna Gaines' third installment of Magnolia Table, which she published in the spring of 2023. Technically, it's a cookbook, just like the previous two iterations, but this one is chock-full of inspiring images of the design enthusiast's gorgeous kitchen.
